He drew on the literary and vernacular traditions of Scottish culture, revitalising the Scots language to create a literature that is modern, engaged and experimental, both nationalist and international in its range. WebChristopher Murray Grieve, who is better known as his alter ego Hugh MacDiarmid, was born in 1892 in Langholm, Dumfriesshire. His father, a rural postman, is said to have aroused in him much of his future radicalism in political and religious belief. Grieve joined the Independent Labour Party already in 1908.
